要揀別妄想,然後拋棄它(下)
不管是要學習任何新事物,首先都必須找到一位老師;在孩提時代,我們對世界一無所知,因此總是都在向某人學習,而不論那個人是誰,他都成為我們的老師。舉個例子,我是個對電腦一竅不通的老人,但只要有個懂電腦的五年級小學生肯教我,那他就是我的老師。年齡與是否能成為老師沒有關係,我們從小開始就不斷向他人學習,那些人都是我們的老師;而那些覺得自己不需要老師的人,我們不忍苛責其「愚痴」,但除此之外,又沒有別的辭彙可以形容他們。

Dhyan is not as simple as mere attention. Dhyan is a technical word. The word Dhyan has come from yogic literature. The authentic and scientific scriptures of Yoga are considered to be Sage Patanjali’s Yoga sutra described as “the eightfold path of Yoga.” The eight limbs of yoga, also known as Ashtang Yoga, are yam, niyam, asan, pranayam, pratyahar, dharana, dhyan, and samadhi. If you consider yam to be the ground floor of the building, then the second floor will be niyam, the third floor asan, the fourth floor pranayam, the fifth floor pratyahar, the sixth dharana, the seventh dhyan and samadhi is the roof top. Now if you want to reach the seventh floor of the building what would you do? You would find a staircase and climb up the stairs one by one until you reach the seventh floor. However, if you are in a hurry and try to rush to jump up to the seventh floor then what will happen? Will you reach the seventh floor? Even after repeated attempts? The answer is no. You will fail in reaching your goal. This is what has happened in the world. Everybody wants to practice dhyan directly, without undergoing the previous steps. That is why no one is successful. If you try to progress step by step, it may take some time but you will surely reach to the seventh floor, which is dhyan. Dhyan is different than “I” and “me” where the mind and ego are not involved. Learning real dhyan, you have to go to a master who has gone beyond the seventh floor. Then he will show you the staircase or will drop a rope from the seventh floor and you will have to climb up the rope or go up step by step. Some of you say you are athletes like a pole vault jumper and are ready to jump, holding the pole in your hands rather than climbing the steps. Then I will tell the pole vault jumper, okay, try. The pole vault jumper is trying to jump to the seventh floor. However, on the other side I put a child and slowly he is climbing up the stairs, step by step. You will find that one day that child will climb to the seventh floor but the pole vault jumper will fail and all of his efforts will go to waste. Do you agree with me? (Everybody said yes.)
Guruji: “Don’t try to be a pole vault jumper. Be a child.”

  禪絕對不只是專注而已,它是個技術性的辭彙,這個字來自於瑜伽文獻。聖者帕坦迦利(Sage Patanjali)所著的《瑜伽經》(Yoga Sutra)是公認的權威瑜伽科學著作,他將瑜伽分類為八個次第步驟,即是所謂的「八部瑜伽」(Ashtang Yoga),內容依序為「處眾生戒」(Yam)、「自淨戒」(Niyam)、「生命載體調整術」(Asan)、「生命導引術」(Pranayam)、「內攝」(Pratyahar)、「內心定」(Dharana)、「入禪定」(Dhyan)與「入正定」(Samadhi)。若你們將八部瑜伽看做是一棟大樓的話,那一樓就是處眾生戒,二樓是自淨戒……以此類推,七樓會是入禪定,而頂樓是入正定。現在,如果想到這棟房子的七樓去而又沒電梯可搭,你們會怎麼做?你們一定得先找到樓梯間,然後一步一步向上爬,直到七樓為止;然而,若你們心急如焚,想用跳的方式直接到七樓去,那會發生什麼事?即使不斷嘗試,有人能一口氣直接跳到七樓嗎?答案非常明顯,你們不可能達成目標,但這個現象如今卻正在全世界上演,每個人都想略過其他步驟直接入禪定,所以沒有人成功;若你們願意按部就班開始進行,雖然會花上一段時間,但必定能夠爬到七樓,也就是入禪定。入禪定與自我意識毫無關聯,要學習如何入禪定,你們必須先找到一位已經爬上七樓,或更高樓層的上師,他會告訴你如何找到樓梯間,或者會從七樓放一條繩子下來,這樣你們就能依照他的指導,一步步爬上七樓,或順著繩子攀上七樓。有些人跟我說自己是撐竿跳選手,已經準備好長竿並隨時能夠起跳,所以不用爬樓梯。我會跟那些人說:「沒問題,去試試看。」於是那些撐竿跳選手會一再反覆地嘗試要跳到七樓;然而,另一方面,我會抱起一個小孩放到樓梯間,並告訴他慢慢一步一步順著樓梯往上爬。直到有一天你們會發現,小孩子已經爬到七樓去了,但那些撐竿跳選手依舊無法達到目標,他們所做的一切努力全都付諸流水。你們同意我所說的嗎?(大家齊喊:同意!)
所以要當小孩子,不要做撐竿跳選手。

In the Bible it is said, if you want to enter the Kingdom of God, you have to become a child. To become a child is to become worthless for the world and then one's searching for a Guru to become worthy of oneself. That is why Indian scriptures, Chinese scriptures and all Nirvana scriptures proclaim that one should go to the Guru to become worthy of yourself, learn from him this spiritual practice and progress on the path with his guidance. Those who have an aversion to Guru's say, “Why should I go to a Guru? I am an intelligent person and I can progress on my own.” Such people are unfortunate. They are ignorant. But we are all fortunate because we decided to choose a Guru on the path of spirituality which is unknown to us.

  在《聖經》中提到:「若想進入上帝的天國,必須先成為一個小孩。」而成為一個小孩意指變得對這個世俗世界毫無用處,隨後他自然就會開始尋找上師,因為這個行為使他重獲價值,這也是為何世上所有經典都告訴我們必須跟隨上師學習,並以此建立自己的價值;我們向上師學習靈性修行的方法,並在他的引導下逐步提昇。那些持反對意見的人也許會說:「為什麼一定要找上師?我自己懂的就已經夠多,只要自修就可以成就了。」有這種觀念的人非常不幸,他們既愚痴又無明;但我們卻很幸運,因為我們明白必須要有上師的指導,才有辦法在未知的靈性道路上前進。

If you want to learn something, you must have a Guru or a teacher. In childhood, we were ignorant about the world around us but we learned from someone. So, whomever we learn from, that person is our guru, our teacher. For example, I am an old guy and do not know computers, but a fifth grade boy or girl who knows computers can teach me. Therefore he or she becomes my Guru. There is no age definition for becoming a Guru. Right from childhood, we began learning something from someone who becomes our Guru or teacher. Those who feel they do not need a Guru, we shoudn’t call them “foolish”, but really there is no other word for it. However, we are all fortunate. We are not foolish. We have understood the need for a Guru. If you ask me about choosing my guru, I will tell you gladly that I have not made any mistake in choosing a Guru. I learned a great deal from him and learned the right things so I am happy. I decided to let my Guru help me and let my destiny be decided, but I committed to practicing tirelessly.

  不管是要學習任何新事物,首先都必須找到一位老師;在孩提時代,我們對世界一無所知,因此總是都在向某人學習,而不論那個人是誰,他都成為我們的老師。舉個例子,我是個對電腦一竅不通的老人,但只要有個懂電腦的五年級小學生肯教我,那他就是我的老師。年齡與是否能成為老師沒有關係,我們從小開始就不斷向他人學習,那些人都是我們的老師;而那些覺得自己不需要老師的人,我們不忍苛責其「愚痴」,但除此之外,又沒有別的辭彙可以形容他們。不論如何,我們都是有智慧而幸運的,我們了解上師的重要性;如果你們問我關於我所選擇的上師,我會非常高興地告訴你們,我所做的決定是正確的,我從他那裡學到太多東西,而且所聽聞學習到的事物都是正確無誤的,這令我感到十分欣慰。我決定讓上師與命運來指引我,而我唯一為自己做的一件事,就是在上師的指導下,堅忍不拔地持續實修。
