師徒繼續剛才的對話,上師說:「摩庫,死後我會到什麼地方這件事,我會在那一刻到來時再好好思索,但我剛才已經知道你死後的命運,若你也想知道的話,我可以告訴你。」摩庫說:「噢!請一定要告訴我。」上師回答:「你在來世會變成一隻烏鴉,而剛才在你頭上大便的烏鴉則會投胎為人,下輩子你會不斷勞碌奔波,直到找到那個人並大便在他頭上為止,這就是業力。

【Birthday Discourse, 11 February 2014】

After this much testing, Guru must have of course understood that Mokul is an aspirant of the lower category, Balak of the medium category and Dhimat of the outstanding category. Still, he avoided telling any of them whether he is qualified or unqualified. He told all the three disciples that hereafter they were not to come to him together but separately and assigned a day to each of them. He assigned the first day to Mokul, the second to Balak and the third to Dhimat. The days having been thus fixed, each was also assigned a specific time on his allotted day. All the three aspirants were pleased and each thought that the Guru had consented to give them special guidance.

  經過這些測試後,上師已經很明白,摩庫只屬於一般庸俗的信眾,巴拉喀是較聰明能幹的一類,而諦馬特則是最善根具足的人。然而,他並未告訴這三人是否符合條件資格,而是吩咐他們,在接下來指定的日子裡分別來參見自己。師父分配第一天給摩庫,第二天給巴拉喀,第三天則給諦馬特;日期決定後,每個人又被告知在這些日子裡應該前來的時間。三人對此都感到相當開心,認為上師一定會給予自己特別的指導。

As predetermined, first Mokul presented himself before the Guru. The Guru was at the time seated on an asan spread under a tree in the open space of the ashram. There was another smaller asan placed in front, and this was for the aspirant coming to meet the Guru. Mokul entered, paid respects to the Guru, and then sat down on the open asan before the Guru. Guru then commenced to instruct Mokul: “Attainment of moksha should be the highest goal of human life. The Soul is our true identity, not the body. This Soul is immortal, whereas the body is perishable. Instead of being infatuated with such a body, one must have keenness to realize the Soul. The body is worthless after death ….”. Guru was in the process of thus imparting his teaching, when the impatient Mokul interrupted and inquired: “Guruji, where does our Soul go after our body dies?” The Guru replied, “The fate of our Soul after the death of our body is determined according to our karmas. If we have done auspicious karmas, our Soul moves to higher realms; but if we have done inauspicious karmas, our Soul descends to lower realms.” Mokul once again became impatient and again interrupted with a second question: “Guruji, where will your Soul go when you die?” Observe that only an unqualified disciple can ask questions like this. Still, the Guru calmly replied: “That I do not know.” Surprised, Mokul asked a yet further question: “Have you not been able to know even after so many years of practicing austerities what will be the fate of your Soul after your death? Note that the disciple who had so far been addressing the Guru respectfully had now turned to disrespectful forms of address towards him.

  依照約定,摩庫首先到來。當時師父正坐在道場空地樹下的瑜伽墊上,另外有一張較小的墊子則放在前面,那是準備好讓前來小參的弟子坐的。摩庫向上師頂禮跪拜,隨後坐在上師面前,上師開口指導摩庫:「證悟解脫是人類生命最崇高的目標,靈性才是真正的自我,色身不過是虛妄的產物;靈性是永恆的存在,而色身只是短暫的現象,我們對於追求解脫必須具備強烈的企圖心,而非迷戀這個暫時的色身,色身在死亡後就一文不值……。」上師正在諄諄教誨,但摩庫已經感到不耐煩,他開口打斷:「師父,在我們死後靈性會去什麼地方?」上師回答:「色身死亡後,靈性的去處跟我們生前所造作的業息息相關。若生前所做所為都是殊勝的善業,靈性就會前往天界;但若都是不好的惡業,靈性則會墮入惡道中。」對這段話摩庫又感到不耐煩,於是又插嘴問了第二個問題:「師父,您的靈性在死後會到哪裡去?」雖然早已知道這位弟子是個根器低劣的庸人,上師仍舊平靜地回答:「我不知道關於這個問題的答案。」摩庫感到意外,接著又更進一步問:「難道你在經過這麼多年精進苦修後,仍然無法知道自己死後的去處嗎?」我們可以發現,這位弟子對上師說話的態度,已經由先前的恭敬轉變為現在的輕蔑。

It came to pass that as Mokul finished asking his question, a bird perched on the tree excreted a dropping. Mokul looked up and saw that a crow was perched on a branch of the tree and it was indeed the guilty party that had excreted a dropping on his head. Angered, Mokul lifted a stone lying near by and flung it at the crow with the intent of killing the crow. Instead of striking the crow, the stone struck a branch of the tree and fell back on Mokul’s head. For its part, the crow merely called a few times and went and perched on a branch of another tree near by. Mokul lifted a second stone and again flung it at the crow. That, too, failed to strike the crow which now flew and settled on a branch of a tree outside the ashram. Mokul ceased chasing it and went back and sat down before the Guru, though his temper had not yet cooled.

  在摩庫問這個問題的同時,有隻停在樹上的鳥剛好拉了一坨大便下來,不偏不倚正掉在他頭上。摩庫抬起頭,看見一隻烏鴉站在上頭的樹枝上,他肯定這隻烏鴉就是大便在他頭上的兇手,因此滿懷憤怒地隨手撿起一塊石頭,朝著烏鴉用力丟過去,企圖把牠打死。可是石頭沒有丟中烏鴉,反而在打中樹枝後反彈回來敲中自己腦袋,烏鴉對此只是叫了幾聲,拍拍翅膀飛到旁邊另一棵樹上休息。摩庫則又在地上撿起另一顆石頭砸向烏鴉,這次同樣沒有擊中,烏鴉則是飛到道場外面的樹叢裡去了。此時摩庫才放棄追趕,悻悻然回到上師身邊坐下,心中依舊怒意難消。

Continuing the conversation further, the Guru said: “Mokul, where my Soul is destined to go after my death is a matter that I will think about at that time. But I have just learned the fate of your Soul upon your death. If you so desire, I can let you know about it” Mokul said: “Yes, do tell.” Guru said: “In your next life, you shall be a crow, and the crow who excreted a dropping over you will become a human. In that life, you will know no rest till you have in turn excreted a dropping over that human. This is the principle of karma. Instead of taking the crow’s natural act as a misconduct directed towards you, if you had just treated it as an innocent act, which it truly was, you would not have been motivated to so much anger and vengeance. But you expressed a feeling of revenge towards an unintelligent bird. So, as a fruit of that karma, you shall become a crow and excrete over him. Only then will that feeling of revenge find rest and the karma be destroyed. This is the subtle science of karma which is unalterable.”

  師徒繼續剛才的對話,上師說:「摩庫,死後我會到什麼地方這件事,我會在那一刻到來時再好好思索,但我剛才已經知道你死後的命運,若你也想知道的話,我可以告訴你。」摩庫說:「噢!請一定要告訴我。」上師回答:「你在來世會變成一隻烏鴉,而剛才在你頭上大便的烏鴉則會投胎為人,下輩子你會不斷勞碌奔波,直到找到那個人並大便在他頭上為止,這就是業力。你剛才把烏鴉的行為當成是針對自己而來的惡意舉動,而非視為出自動物本能的行為;若當時你只把那件事當成無心之過,其實事實上也是如此,你就不會因此發起如此大的瞋恨心。但你卻對一隻沒有智慧的鳥類生起了報復的念頭,因此,作為這個業的果報,你也會轉世成一隻烏鴉,並大便在那個人頭上。因為唯有在此之後,你的仇恨心才會平息,同時這個業果也才會跟著消失,這就是不可轉的不可思議因果律。」
